How to Assemble a Disaster Supply Kit
Keep a kit ready to go within hours and store in a convenient place. Items to include:
- First aid kit and essential medications
- Blankets or sleeping bags
- Infant necessities (baby food, diapers, and toys)
- Water: At least 3 gallons per person per day for 5 days
- Use your emergency supply or boil water before using until there is official word that the water is safe
- Laminate prescriptions and important papers i.e. valid ID, insurance, titles, birth certificates
- Clothing: Protective clothing, rainwear, extra clothing
- Battery powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries
- Canned food and can opener
- Checkbook, cash, credit cards, ATM cards
- Eyeglasses
- Toiletries
- Fire extinguisher
- Special items for elderly or disabled family members
- Written instructions for how to turn off gas, water and electric, if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you'll need a professional to turn them back on.)
