Keep a kit ready to go within hours and store in a convenient place. Items to include:
First aid kit and essential medications
Blankets or sleeping bags
Infant necessities (baby food, diapers, and toys)
Water: At least 3 gallons per person per day for 5 days
Use your emergency supply or boil water before using until there is official word that the water is safe
Laminate prescriptions and important papers i.e. valid ID, insurance, titles, birth certificates
Clothing: Protective clothing, rainwear, extra clothing
Battery powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries
Canned food and can opener
Checkbook, cash, credit cards, ATM cards
Eyeglasses
Toiletries
Fire extinguisher
Special items for elderly or disabled family members
Written instructions for how to turn off gas, water and electric, if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you'll need a professional to turn them back on.)
